New Food

Well the food war continues here at Casa De Housecat. Mom was so determined to have me try the new kidney-health food that I gave in. Well it was only a few hours later that I realized there was a reason I don't like to eat food with rice.

::Whispers:: It upsets my tummy.

So there I was, feeling gastric distress, and I let out the meow you save for times when things are really not right in your world. You know the one. Guaranteed to jolt a human Mom out of a dead sleep at any hour of the night. They come running.

I gave her a look of sadness and a hint of "I told you so" mixed in. She felt bad. She decided to back to my regular food till the upset wore off, but now I don't really want to eat that either. It's a free for all. Anyone know of a good kidney food with ample gravy and no rice?

Book Alert: You can win a free copy of my book by entering a comment on my great friend, and fellow cat author, Sparkle's blog post here. You just have to leave a comment saying you want to win before the 21st of July. Sparkle will be coming out with her second book soon and I think I will get to give a copy of her book to one of you. Cool huh?

  1. How nice of Sparkle to give away one of your books.

So sorry the new food upset your tummy. I gave my mom a hard time about my new food last week, but I finally gave in and ate some today.

  2. Oh no, Fin! I'm sorry that food didn't agree with you. I hope one of the other cats who comes by to comment has a good suggestion for you - I think a no-rice, gravy-ful kidney-helping food would be ideal!

  3. Not a lot of choices, and the jury is still out about how much diet helps.

but feeding all canned with help with water intake and that is a big advantage.

But there is Hill's k/d (no rice), PVD (Purina Veterinary Diet) NF and Royal Canin Renal LP (both have rice). You can get any of them through vets or with a prescription from PetFoodDirect.com.

and here's a home made recipe, too (at the end of this article)

This has rice in it too, but maybe you could change out the rice with potatoes or green peas.

  4. Maybe your mom will start cooking for you? I know I still dream about it...purrrrrr...

Hope your tummy is feeling better.

  5. Are you over your rice-related tummy trouble now? Hope so... sending stomach-settling vibes and purrayers.

  6. Oh Fin,
You poor kitty cat...Mommy knows that howl well.

We don't know of any food to suggest...paws crossed you find one that is gravyful and digestible, soon!

Mommy says that some of these so-called prescription foods are a scam...make sure you do your research. Angel Chuckles had kidney problems and he became pickier (eating-wise)as he got older; apparently sometimes kidney problems make kitties a little bit nauseous.

  9. I am sorry to hear that the food upset you so much. I don't eat any rice at all, I'd spit them out if there were any mixed in. Maybe rice doesn't agree with kitties???? Are you sure is's the rice and not something else?

  10. Ohhh, my lovely friend, I hope you find some suitable noms soon, we can't have you getting skinny! You're perfect just the way you are!

  11. Oh my, that doesn't sound good, Finny. Did your parents try to mix in the new food into the old little by little? Maybe your tummy will tolerate it better if you get small rations of it at first and every day/week a little more. Good luck with this!

  14. Oh, Fin, so sorry about the tum tum. Hopefully one of Terri's suggestions will do the trick. I do know for a FACT that food with gravy is more deelicious. Maybe the purpose of the rice is to have less protein for your kidneys?

  15. Ugh, tummy upsets are awful! I have a very sensitive tummy too, Fin. We don't know of any kidney food that might be good, but we'll definitely ask around.

Even though it probably won't help your tummy, I'm sending smooches anyway.

  17. We hope you feel better, Fin! It was all so much easier when we cats simply ate what we evolved to eat: rodents, birds, etc. Now it's all confusing, with a plethora of conflicting information.

    Good luck to your mom!

  18. Oh Fin we are so sorry your tummy is hurting and not feeling well. We don't have any suggestions about a kidney food. Maybe someone will have a suggestion. We sure hope you can find something.
    Have a great day.

  21. I don't know if your Mom looked when we suggested it before (we didn't have the link then) but this site http://www.felinecrf.org/ has a very comprehensive overview of fuuds to use when treating CRF. It's worth a look.

The protein used in commercial prescription diets is VERY low quality and it's thought that this causes problems itself. The proportion of carbohydrates in these diets is very high and cats don't need more than 5% carbs to metabolise protein. If you are having a restricted protein diet, it's all the more important for the protein to be of high quality.

We think the Holisticat site diet info is good too. But do have a look at the link above if you can.

Fin dear, I hope your tummy settles soon, it's not unknown for rice to upset tums.

  22. Oh Fin,
I'm so sorry to hear of your tummy upset. IF all else fails, tell your Mom to cook you special food. She'll do it if it makes you happy. Meanwhile, I'm hoping you have a big sun patch.

  23. Fin, we're sorry you got an upset tummy from that new food. Others have given you some good suggestions...we agree, the prescription diets sometimes always aren't the best. We hope you find a good food!

  24. Fin - we swear that freshly cooked chick-hen is very good for upset tums and un-upset tums - especially when it's slightly warm still. nom nom.

  25. I sure hope you and your Mom get the menu straightened out! Yea for Sparkle, but I already have your super wonderful book!

  26. I don't like the kidney food either! Hope you feel better soon.

  27. Sorry the new food didn't agree with your tummy. We likes Chicken Soup but we don't know if it comes in a formula for kidney problems and we thinks it has rice.

  28. Well, here after 10 lbs of Hills K/D it ran out and my parents provided some good old Purina Naturals from the Grocery store and they mix in some Meow Mix. Both Cheap and Good eats if you ask me. Plus I have them trained to feed me endless Temptations and Whisker Lickin's. All I have to do is cut them off or sit on the counter and try to lock eyes with them and as soon as I do, VOILA treats are produced.
Maybe Terry's suggestions would work. I'm going to check out that website and maybe try a different kidney diet. My vet only stocks Hills and I only eat dry food.
Kidneys are important, Finny so eat yer KD or you can't have any pudding :)

  29. Hi Fin, we are so sorry your new food gave you an upset tummy - we are sending you lots of purrs for it to get better. As far as foods, we don't really have any good suggestions as far as kidney diets go - but it sounds like some of the others had some great suggestions so hopefully one of those will work for you.

  30. Hi Fin! Sorry you are having tummy troubles - no fun! I hope your mom gets your food situation sorted soon.

My mom just learned I have kidney problems too - I think I'm in the early stages of CRF. I don't have to eat a special diet but I used to get raw and now I'm not allowed :(

My mom has done some reading and it's the phosph'rus in meat/protein that is the problem. She found a good article in the library at www.onlynaturalpet by Dr Jean Hofve that mentions some canned kitty food with 200 mg of phosph'rus or less, i guess that's good.

Stinky goodness is the best, if you can get it :) Drink lots of water!
    take care- purrs, Smidgen
