What's in a Name?

Many of you might have noticed that my name ::whispers:: sounds like a boy cat name. My friends know I am a female feline in my grannycat years, but my name doesn't quite reveal that. Mom had no idea that my name sounded boyish till I started blogging. I know many of you suffer similar fates, boys with girlie name and girls with boyish names.

So how did I get my name?

Those of you who have read my book are all yelling out the answer now I'm sure. Fin is from the French word Fini which Mom claims means finished. She was so happy the search to find the perfect kitten (me) was finished she said C'est Fini and that became my name.

I have lots of names. Seems humans everywhere have a hard time naming their pets and keeping consistent. You can understand the variations on your name, Finny and Finny Da Floof are mine. It's the ones that are a complete departure that have me stumped.

Speed Bump - Sure I like to sit in the hallway refusing to move, but really.

Toontz or Toontzy - ??

Junior - I am not sure who is my Senior, but it makes me feel part of the family.

What do you call your humans?

  1. We call our People "Lazybones"! Because they don't wait on us hand and paw like they should. Mommy disappears for many hours most days, to go see Mr. Job, and Daddy keeps shooing us off his desk and vacuums a lot. Which leaves us un-petted and un-played with.
That's our story and we're sticking to it!

  2. My mom keeps calling me "Baby Girl". I am a 15 year old ladycat, I'm no baby.

  4. That is pretty interesting about your name, Fini. I don't have an interesting story about mine, but I will say it is pretty obviously a b oy name. Lately Mom has been saying "Hey, Baby" to me, and I really like to be called "Good Boy" since it usually means treats for coming back from an escapade. My usual name for my Mom is "Meow, Feed Me. "

  5. We call our human, Mommy...She calls us Calle Girl, Halle Cat and Sukki Su, as well as in general, Mommy's Sweeties, Baby Girls, Mommy's Beautiful Kitties/Girls=you get the picture; but the most effective way to call us is with the treat bag!!...kisses beautiful Finny...Calle, Halle, Sukki

  6. Sometimes I get mistaken for a boy too, which is really annoying, but I think it's more my attitude than my name - I tend to be a bit of a Tomgirl kitty.

I think it's really insulting that your humans sometimes call you "speed bump." I mean, really.

I can't tell what I call my human. She might get a teensy bit insulted.

  13. Fin, I love your name! I call my human mom (and a few names she can't understand sometimes). She calls me Holly, Holly Oopster, Hollywags, The Hollister and a contracter fixing the fence when I was a puppy called me Stink Winky Poo Poo! Mom heard that one and it caught on too. When she's mad she sometimes yells Hey You at me! Lots of love, Holly and her mom

  15. We have lots of names too. We think are mom is confused.
We just call our mom when we want food or treats. We don't call her anything special, just to come to us and cater to us.

  16. Toontz? Toontzy? Does that make you "the driving cat"... it does rather fit with the speed bumps.
    Mmmmm.
We don't call our humans; we find merely ignoring them achieves the best results.

  17. Fin, we knew that story about your name because of the book, and we admit we usually hear Fin associated with boys, but we think it is a great name for a ladycat!

And as far as names, we have the same problem you do, sometimes the nicknames are like our own names (like Stella is StellyBelly) but sometimes they make no sense at all (like Barney is Smiley Joe - sure he is Smiley - but Joe). And as for our mom and dad, well, they are just plain old mom and dad!

  18. Fin, we knew how you got your name because we read in it your book...we always wondered about that because Fin is not a real common name to give a kitty!!

What do we call our humans?? Well, mom is mom...or the food lady...and dad-guy is dad-guy...or that guy...or the guy....

  22. Fin, we love your name. All the cats around here call me Meow. Guess that is close to Momma. But whenever we want something we just say Meow softly and get it louder and louder and pretty soon we are screaming Meow. Have a great day.

  30. We call mom and dad...mom and dad! But I'm sworn to secrecy on the things we call them when we are hissed off!

My momma Ellie and I were named by mom's co-workers at her day hunting place. Mom asked for help and they thought we should be named after great women so they came up with Eleanor Roosevelt and Correta Scott King...and that is where we became Ellie and Cory.

Cory is a boys name too but my full name is Coretta.

  31. Hahameow...mewmie said the at at her day hunting place (the vets) is called Speedbump sometimes (usually right after they trip over her). We liked learning how you got your name, and also about Cory being Coretta--we were confused about her being a him in the beginning. We have nicknames here too, but all of us get called 'Get Down' quite often!
