We arrived at the house and let him out. We were sure he would casually sniff about for a few minutes - instead he bolted for under the fridge. After a quick move, he instead darted for under/inside the recliner instead.
"Holy Cod he's fast!" Hubby exclaimed as Quill bolted for under the sofa.
Quill was so scared with two giants yelling "No!" and chasing after him. Desperate, we stuck him, his carrier, food, water and a litter box in the bathroom and excused ourselves.
"Wow!" I said. I think the realization of a new kitten was hitting me. "We got ourselves a cave kitten!"
We covered every hidey hole we could think of. We found Fin's baby swing toy for luring him out of any other hidey holes he might find. We realized he might be too tiny to roam freely. (Quill's actual commentary - Ww6*/8.000000000000000000000000000002. - I guess he disagreed and decided I should get to the best part).
I had been so worried about telling the first rescue group about Fin's blog. I was afraid they might read it and come to collect the kitten should it report cruel treatment like being denied roast chicken. When we went to go meet Quill I decided not to say anything to Kacie either. You just never know what people will think when you report you speak as a cat on a blog.
I emailed Kacie to ask a question a few days after Quill's arrival. I knew she loved him, and had wanted to keep him, even after their short time to bond. I couldn't decide if I should mention the blog or not. Would it make her sad to see the one that got away or make her happy I wondered. I decided to tell her and let her decide for herself.
She wrote back the best email ever. She told me about losing her own sweet cat Charlie, and about how this little kitten eased her own pain. She couldn't keep him, but she wanted to make sure he found a great home. She had googled my email address as soon as I sent the email asking about Quill. (She's so smart!)
She found my blog and book right away. When we went to meet Quill, she already knew about Fin. She saw all the love that all of you had given us over losing her. She knew how much I was grieving Fin's loss. She already knew how much this little kitten would be loved in the world. She said she felt like she had won the lottery because she would get to watch him grow up, be loved, and be famous.
She wasn't losing him - she was sharing him. Yep, we think she's pretty awesome too!

Chew this cord? Me? Never! |
Oh that Quill is gonna be fun, fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a terrific ride! Howdy Quill!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love how you and Kacie are in touch, and how Quill has been loved, and will continue to be loved all through his life. :)
ReplyDeleteWe think you getting Quill is gonna be such a good thing!!
ReplyDeleteIt will be lovely for Kacie to keep up to date with Quill's progress via Fin's blog. You have reminded me of when we first brought Eric and Flynn home. It had been so long since we had small kittens that we had forgotten what small gaps they could get into. We spent their first night going over the house with a fine tooth comb blocking any gaps we could find.
ReplyDeleteI can hear Fin now, snickering up her fur sleeve! You are gonna have SO much fun.
ReplyDeleteWHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
Love that last picture of Quill!
ReplyDeleteI'm always thrilled to hear back from my foster kittens.. :) What I wouldn't do to find a home for one who let it blog :)
ReplyDeleteI have go giggle at cave kitten.. :)
Six weeks is awful young, and giving it so much room might just lead to litter box issues because bladders are so small at that age. one room or area of the house would be a good idea for a few weeks. Then maybe have boxes around the house for a few more weeks. It can be something as simple as a flat cardboard box with a light layer of litter in it (kitten bladders are small)
Congratulations!!
Such a wonderful post! And OMG - you are in for a wild ride with a boy kitten. LOL!
ReplyDeletep.s. Mocha is an old pro (14 yrs.) at chewing cords- we call him the 'PuppyCAT' :-)
Quill sure is a live wire. We know Fin is very pleased with her choice. :)
ReplyDeleteOMC, 6 weeks is very young to be given a whole big house, so you are wise to start small and let his territory increase with his confidence. Teri said she can email you the handout that she helped write for her day hunting place (with advice from the behaviorists they recommend to their clients). When our kittens left home at 16 weeks, they were well past the cord chewing phase and confident enough not to hide, but even then, Teri recommended a slow intro a big new world...
ReplyDeleteHey Quill-No, stay away from the cords!
ReplyDeleteWhen we first arrived we were also around 6 weeks and Mommy confined us in the bathroom to help us get used to them. When she let us roam the house, I hid UTB and it took Mommy several mini heart attacks before she finally found me...almost an hour later. Right after that, we found an annoying thing hanging around our necks that made awful jingly sounds.
You're in a great home, Quill!
Love, Ling
Hey, Quill. You've got yourself a great home, little kitteh.

Did I notice hairy toes and Maine Coon cat tuffs on his ears? And I assume he has the beginnings of a floofy tail. Those little MC guys grow up to be very mushy, prepare yourself...I know from experience.
ReplyDeleteAww, this post brought tears to our eyes. This was a win-win situation. Now, time fur sum adorable kitten antics!!!
ReplyDeleteQuill already has some amazing blogging chops! He is going to be loved AND famous!
ReplyDeleteQuill my man,
ReplyDeleteYou're my kind of kitten. Wish I get to babysit you instead of Seb. We tabbies should stick together. purrr...meow!
Quill is going to be a lot of fun! But yeah, he IS really tiny right now. Even though I was four months old when my human brought me home, she did not let me out of her sight for quite a long while, carrying me into her (our) office to spend the day while she worked and then leaving me in the downstairs bathroom at night to sleep. Gah, was I relieved when I finally could do stuff on my own!
ReplyDeleteIt is awfully young at six weeks, so keep him in one space for a while! I am sure he will soon adapt. He looks very bright. My last kitty was just six weeks when I had him and I kept him in the kitchen. He was very happy. When he was ready to discover the world, he made it very clear!
ReplyDeleteOh what a precious little morsel. I remember now my total complete ignorance when we first brought Robin home. She was a munificent 7 weeks of age and she was allowed the run of the house becuse we were totally ignorant. Completely. She got into and under and behind things that were so difficult to get her out of. Did we learn? of course not. Sheesh, ignorance is just that..ignorance. But she made it to 16 years of age.
ReplyDeleteOh, this is Katie Isabella's Mom. Sorry I forgot to log out of mine again.
ReplyDeleteQuill is such a cute little mancat in training - we're sure he will settle into a smaller area if you are out but if you are at home we think he will be learning how to be in charge of the household and his staff very quickly!
ReplyDeleteLuv Hannah and Lucy xx xx
We're glad Quill is getting used to his new home. Mom says even Lexi (our foster) surprises us with her antics and she's 4!! Kittens sure can get into everything!!
ReplyDeleteThe Florida Furkids and Lexi
Yeah Quill....
ReplyDeleteMom says that part of helping her recover from some of our losses is having kittens around. It is hard to be too sad when there is this little body tearing around having fun...and then falling over for a nap.
Wow! We're just now hearing the news about Quill! This is fantastic! Mom Paula has leaky eyes as she reads this because she remembers the emotion she felt when she first held Truffle and losing Sweet Praline. She also remembers those feelings of bewilderment when Truffle hid the first couple of days coming to live with her. We are so happy for you.
ReplyDeleteMom Terri (breeder) has expressed the same comments about the blog for Truffle and Brulee. She reads it first thing every morning and says it is a gift to her because she gets to see the girls grow up!
Truffle and Brulee
how adorable and how wonderful. I think we are in for a wonderful ride readeing about this little darling. Looking forward to seeing so much more.. Welcome to blog land Quill and all the wonders it brings. Hugs GJ xx
ReplyDeleteA huge warm loving welcome to Quill ~ you have so picked a wonderful forever home. And you also have a beautiful loving Bridge-Angel called Fin looking out for you ~ how lucky are you? xx
ReplyDeleteOh Quill, your are giving your new people a run for their money. Too funny. Well funny to us. I can see a new book starting already. You are just so darn cute. We happen to know that you have one terrific home and good job getting those people all trained so early. Loving these posts. Take care.
ReplyDeleteFin is probably having a good laugh at you tackling a tiny BOY kitten but she will surely guide Quill as she guided you to him. What a handsome fella. We can't wait to hear his voice.
ReplyDeleteLizzie & 3 kitties
We love that Kacie will get to watch Quill grow up and be a part of his life through the blog. She sounds like an awesome person.
ReplyDeleteMommy thinks there may be good news but she is afraid to hope. She fell asleep outside and when she woke up she is pretty sure she heard Socks MEOWING real loud, like he was calling for someone. She hopes he is calling Arty and that she is close. Silly Fenris started barking and now she doesn't hear the cat meowing. Mommy came in to get something to drink cause she is dehydrated. She tried going in the direction she heard the meows coming from but the underbrush is too thick. Anyway as soon as she cools off she is going back out to look.~Scylla, who is sleeping on the desk.
Looks like someone might need some Bitter Apple for the cords...
ReplyDeleteFirst, we want to say "Hi Kacie!" and thank you for recognizing one of the most loving women (and one of the most talented women) on the Planet!
ReplyDeleteWe are already insanely in love with Quill. He has such an intelligent and inquisitive expression. He has a look of just KNOWING that he is destined for great things which I am confident he is. Most of all, he is destined to be enormously loved, not just by his Mom and Dad but by their 1000s of loyal followers!
Quill, you are just about as cute as I was when I was a baby and adopted mum, dad and Huffle. I will have some good advice for you as you grow up :)
ReplyDeleteTeddy Westlife
p.s. Huffle thinks you are adorable too!
Quill is such an active little fellow, how about getting him a brofur or sisfur to play with?
ReplyDeleteQuill is BoyCat? My human Tommy is already in love. He seems like a handful of playfulness and love for you guys. Lucky Quill! :)
ReplyDeleteNoir
PS. The looks Tommy gets when she talks about MY blog---humans writing for pets. Really...some folks just lack imagination. :)
That is amazing story.
ReplyDeleteWE love how Quill's "foster" Mom can now follow "HIM" and watch him grow into a very special mancat.
purrs

Nellie
such a wonderful story, Meg.
ReplyDeleteI know we don't leave our angel kitties, ever, but we need to move on and the one's who are waiting for us appear.
I cannot get over how much this little guy looks both like fin and my Wendell as a baby.
You and HE sure lucked out. Fabulous!
