Mom Gets Steamed

Hi. Mom here. I have a story to tell about my sweet girl. She really is a good kitty. I'm still sick with an upper respiratory infection and I have found the dry desert air doesn't help much when your throat is raw from trying to dislodge a lung.

So I had this idea to steam myself.

Our bathroom has a door that shuts off the potty and the shower into one (claustrophobic) room. We rarely shut this door, since the room is so small. Fin prefers an open door policy too. She has a mild distrust of my going into the shower. She seems generally concerned about what goes on in there, behind the frosted doors. She always stands guard from the other room and watches the shower show (insert pithy cat commentary here and you'll know why I decided to write this in my human voice).

I realized I could take a shower with the door closed and get super steamy. Fin was having none of it. She  would hysterically paw at the door and meow in demanding tones to know I was all right. I finally had to leave the door open a crack and she would sit in the corner, damp and vigilant. Mewing frequently till I would open the shower door and answer back that I was well.

I didn't feel like taking a shower 3-4 times a day. I realized I could just shut the door, sit on the potty and crank up the steam.

Enter concerned kitty who was shut out of the goings on. What was happening in there? Was her Mom in danger?

She would sit on the other side of the door and wail with concern. I would open the door a crack and she would race in and just as quickly race back out - shut the door and repeat, and repeat. I finally found the only way to keep the peace was to leave the door open just a crack and offer neck scritches through the opening.

  2. Ha! Ha! You are a good girl Fin to keep an eye on your mom! I likes to come in the utility room where mom takes her showers! I sit on a stool and watch the shower door!

  3. Don't you know that it's against the rules to let humans go into the bathroom alone? Who knows what kind of trouble you'd get into without our snoopervision?!

  4. Don't cats always get what they want? Jack likes to wait outside the shower stall, and when I come out, he goes in and licks the floor.

  5. Awww - Finny, take good care of your mommy!
Humans can be so trusting of maschines and stuff, you wouldn´t believe it. It´s for us kitties to keep an eye out.

  8. Rudy would just jump in the shower. He's a few sandwiches short of a picnic...

  9. We hope your Mom gets better soon, but it sure sounds like you're on top of things, Fin!

  10. Nice work Fin dear. You know as Head Cat Nurse that it's very dangerous to leave your patient alone in the Steam Therapy Room. Your vigilance ensures your Mom's safety and also your entertainment.

Keep up the good work Fin and get your Mom well again.

PS: Your mail got through! YAY!

  11. MOL!! We love how concerned you are for your mom!
Chevelle likes to paw at the shower curtain when Mom takes her shower.

  12. Those human litterbox places can be dangerous. We're always afraid Mom is going to get flushed down the toilet or down the drain.

Ellie paws at the shower doors when Daddy is in there.

  13. How nice of you, Fin, to look after mommy and try to make sure all is well in that too tiny of a room with all the steam.

  14. Fin, we know you were just concerned about your mom's welfare in there! I do the same thing when my mom likes to sit in the tub with a lot of water...who knows what all that water might do to her!

Hope your mom feels better soon!

  15. Fin, you are a very sweet ladycat. Your Mom is fortunate to have such a concerned girlie.

Hope you feel better soon. It doesn't sound like a fun sickness at all.

  17. Wow, Fin, you're quite protective and vigilant of your human mom. Are we supposed to be too??? Uh oh...!

  18. Sorry that the Mom is still sick. Good job Fin keeping track of her. You must be totally exhausted from running in and out of the bathroom while she was steaming. You are just the best kitty ever to worry so much. And you did get your way in the end. Took that Mom long enough, didn't it.
Have a great week and lots of healing powers to Mom.

  19. Good work Fin! We are suspicious of closed doors too...and if they are closed and something happens, how can you get in and save your mom?

  20. We are pleased you are taking good care of your Mom - even though by now you must be exhausted with all that nursing. When your Mom is better we think she ought to consider bestowing the title of Honorary Matron on you which entitles you to more treats and scritches.

  21. There is just no way she wanted to leave you alone and unprotected!

  22. Fin, I must say, I'm VERY impressed at how well you've trained your human!

PS. Hope the steam helped your Mom.

  23. I DO hope your Mama gets better soon but, I saw that wink at the end Fin, so...... I know it's more about you than her.. hehe...
In our house there is an open door policy because I simply won't have it any other way.
If any door is shut I must pester Mum and Dad until it is opened and LEFT open. This is difficult sometimes when Mum likes to shut the door and read in bed so she won't hear the TV.
I will lie quietly with her UNTIL I notice that the door is shut tightly and then go over and make a fuss so she HAS to get up and open it and as soon as she closes it and gets back in bed, I'm on the other side scratching to get back in.
In our house it's My way or the Highway.
Sometimes I scoot into the closets and end up locked in there for hours...but that's another story for another day ;)
    Keep up the good work.

  24. Fin,
Our biggest concern is the steam may have left your long flowing furs damp and curly. Are you OK?

Keep up the good work nursing your Mom. Our Daddy uses saline nasal spray and tents his head with a towel over a pot of hot water for his sinuses.

  25. Fin's human: You should have left the door open a crack all along and given skritches, so Fin wouldn't have had to go through all the effort of making a ruckus. Sheesh, you humans are hard to train sometimes. But since you are sick and probably a little foggy headed right now, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

  26. Fin, you have got your human superbly trained!

  27. That has happened at our house too - but the problem we have is that once they are in they immediately sit and meow to get out - no matter if there is showering or sitting to steam (my boyfriend literally will say he has to go steam himself sometimes). Can I recommend (as a steamer myself) a steam tent - hot water with a towel over your head. Less cat panic, less cost on water (ours is part of our assessment but still costs for the heating part of the deal) and you can add stuff to the steam to help out with the clearing up. I do it sometimes to get my sinuses going again and it works pretty well. It just has to be a nice stable place where the cat jumping up won't tip the pot over (because Fin will be curious if you do it - believe me, it is like a magnet). It is pretty old school to do it that way but it really can help (but I understand if you pass - the boyfriend won't try it either).

  28. Da bafroom is a danjerus place! Yoo could drown (yes, in da shower, why do yoo think us kitties avoid it), yoo could get sucked into da human litter even! We hafta make sure dat yoo, as da opener of cat food cans, are safe. Mom puts peppermint oil in a pan and heats da water den puts a towl over her head and around a pot and breeves in da minty steam...of course da mint smell makes us all hang out wif her trying to get a sniff too!

  31. Sorry to hear you are still feeling bad. Hope you get better soon. Thank Fin for the purrs sent Niko's way. Sadly, Niko passed away last night. We are in mourning right now.

  32. Fin mom, you should really know better than to think you could go in there alone. We mean, seriously. You could get hurt or something. And Fin wouldn't get her attention that way. Sheesh.

But we're still sending purrrrrrrs that you get better soon. :)

    Purrs and hugs,
    The Kitty Krew

SS is back and I am following her around all day (and night), tripping her up a few times, especially at night when her glasses are off. Blind as a bat without her glasses, that SS of mine.
