We were all so excited to see who would take up residence in it. I kept up my vigil, as did my parents, and I'm ready to report the answer. Before I reveal - Do you think it was this plump, er, sweet dove? She was our number one suspect.
Sadly, the answer is no, not her.
One day Mommy and I spied a tasty, er, little humming bird flying out of the nest with a twig in it's beak. We thought she had claimed it, and we were all so impressed by her moxie to take over such a big nest. It would have been a mansion for her and her family.
A few days later Daddy reported seeing a juicy, er, large finch pulling off a chunk of the nest and flying off. It sat partially dismantled for a number of weeks, as we waited. A big wind storm came in one night and the next morning the whole top half was gone. The nest is now only about a third of the size you see in the photo above.
:: Sighs Deeply:: I think it's officially abandoned. I don't know why they didn't just leave it as is and use it - maybe because a house full of people and a cat could watch them? At least it was recycled somewhere. Speaking of which Mommy wants to climb up there and use the nest that's left in a craft project - I sense danger.
I have some birdies building a nest in the bird house on my porch!
ReplyDeleteI have lots of native birds that live in the trees outside my house. They don't seem to be scared of me and Cosmo, but I guess that's because we don't climb trees.
ReplyDeleteOoo...maybe evil squirrels are living in it??
ReplyDeleteSorry you aren't getting any birdie neighbors to watch.
ReplyDeleteIt looks kind of like a squirrel nest. Don't give up! You might yet have good watching opportunities!
ReplyDeleteThose birds do sound tasty...too bad they flew off. Our Mom is not crafty at all and can't imagine what to do with a bird's nest.
ReplyDeleteCome to my house Fin, there are about 100 pigeons we can watch together! Birdie watch is best, right?

Our mom has found a couple of robin's nests on the ground...they musta fallen out of the trees...she sez she's gonna use them in a craft project...but we have other ideas for them...tell your mom to be careful if she does climb up there...
ReplyDeleteHummingbird nests are very tiny and cute. It is too bad that that the little creature didn't get to reap the benefits of all her hard work.
ReplyDeleteI've found that hummingbirds are tough little creatures...they'll fight off larger birds and even dive-bomb cats (not me, of course!).
It's such a shame you can't watch some tasty I mean pretty birds grow up in the nest.

Hmmm! Interesting about that nest. We have a squirrel in our trees here! We have been wondering if it had a nest or if it is living in our attic!
ReplyDeleteWhen the boy beans were little a mocking bird built a nest in a small oak tree. Youngest boy bean liked going to look at the babies (the nest was on his eye level) until the Momma Bird scratched his back. ~S,S,C & F
ReplyDeleteThey must want new digs for each batch off eggs. Have the camera ready when Mom goes after that nest, I sense a good blackmailing opportunity.

We have pigeons who build their nest in our tree, which is right outside the window, every year. When we go outdoors and watch them, they try to poop on us and mum has to wash us off.
ReplyDeleteThat was a big nest! It had to belong to that big ole dove!! How sad that it is now abandoned. Maybe a new one will be built in your tree!
ReplyDeleteLast year just before I moved in with mom a blackbird wanted to build her nest behind a pot on her terrace. Mom was very sad but stopped that attempt as the bird wouldn't have had a single second in peace there. We have pigeons nesting too but the magpies rob their eggs. It shall be interesting what the feathers will be up to this Spring with two cats out there...

Speaking of which Mommy wants to climb up there and use the nest that's left in a craft project - I sense danger.
ReplyDeleteAs you should! Bird's nest soup is made from the nest of cave swifts. Did you know that cave swifts make their nests entirely out of strands of their own saliva [gag]? Now, imagine if your Mom wanted to make a quilt out of it instead.
I'm be scared too, Fin. No saliva quilts for me, thanks!
Maybe some nice birdie will build another one near by:)
ReplyDeleteOur mom's mom used to warn her never to touch a nest because there are mites in there from the birds. Don't know if that's true but our mom never touched a nest in her life!!
ReplyDeleteProbably an old wives tale!
Wowie, that's a big nest, and it must have been a great home fur a big juicy birdie! hehehe Last year, a momma birdie builded a nest in our carport and then the baby birdies hatched out. Momma thought they were so cute!
ReplyDeleteKittyhugs and purrs from MaoMao!
You could use it as a tree top den!
ReplyDeleteMust have been some pretty big birds. Well, recycling is a good thing and we're sure you'll get lots of other birds to - ehem - look at.
