Mitten Monday

Long time readers of this blog will remember Mittens.

Mittens is a neighborhood cat Mom and Dad have fed over the years. They are quite fond of him.

Mittens showed nothing but respect for Angel Fin, I'm told. Never a hiss or a swat. So I figured we'd be chums. The first time I met Mittens (through the screen door) I squeaked out a joyful hello.

And Mittens hissed at me. I was a little shocked, but I figured I'd just surprised him. I'm sure he was expecting his friend Fin.

This morning Mom opened the door to give Mittens some food (my food by the way) and I figured it was time to introduce myself again.

Hey buddy!

Mittens: Hissssss.

Seriously? You don't want to be pals?

Mittens: Hisssssss.

So there we are. I was nothing but a gentleboy to him and he is still all hiss. How do you think I can be his pal?

  1. Just be patient. We are sure he was just shocked to see another kitteh where he expected Fin.

  2. Yes, it's the hiss of shock. Or maybe he's intimidated by an ample-sized kitten.

  3. I think Mittens just prefers a ladycat.

  5. Mittens probably was surprised to see a different cat, Quill. Give it time...we're sure he'll warm up to you.

  10. Mittens may think you did something bad to Fin...you know, ate her or something...you are quite ample and maybe he thinks Fin is in your belly.

Ok, maybe I've had too much nip....

  11. Aw, I'm sure he'll get used to you soon! He just needs a little time. And maybe some food or treats with you in sight so he associates you with good things.

  12. He sees you as a rival, Quill. Miss Fin was a sweet ladycat and you are all tail and testosterone. Bit of a shock for him, I'd say!

  13. I agree with what Sparkle said. Give Mittens time to realize you are there to stay.

  14. Mittens knew you weren't Angel Fin. All kitties smell different. We think he will be friends eventually :)

  15. don't worry - he will get used to you - it will just take a little time.....

  16. He misses his gorgeous Fin. She kept him in line and Mittens probably knows you are just a young whipper snapper, so he is training you Quill. He will soon be your friend. Have a great week.

  17. I think Mittens hissed because he expected Fin and not someone else. I hope you two become friends some day!

  19. Aw, Quill. It's Monday. Everyone's a little hissy on Mondays. Maybe a little offering of tuna (aka: hissy reduction solution) would help. Time and patience and you'll be pals in no time.

  20. As someone else mentioned, sometimes man-cats don't like other man-cats. Maybe if they grow up together, it's okay. It is possible that over time, Mittens will get used to you, but I wouldn't count on it. Maybe you can be screen door friends, like I was with Elvis Pussley.

And, how come Mittens doesn't have any mittens? Has he lost them? Doesn't know where to find them?

  21. Just be yourself dear Quill you will win Mittens over in no time.

  23. Quill, you gotta be patient furriend. Older kitty can sometimes be grumpy at first.

  24. Oh Quill....us "elder" cats have a tough time with newbies. Don't take this the wrong way, but I'd probably hiss at you too. Just give us time though and we'll come around. Especially if the food is good.
