This is Why

For the first part of my life Mom had great aspirations of being an artist. She tried every medium known in art land. Naturally, I helped. I tasted what I could and left my floof in anything she made. From watercolor to clay, she tried it all. She had great ideas in her head, but they never really translated into substance. Meanwhile Aunt Jenny can turn almost anything into a piece of art.

Mom struggled to find her medium to express herself in art and documented all her ideas and frustrations in journals. Writing came so easily to her that she completely discounted that perhaps words were meant to be her artistic medium.

Yes, she can be dense.

There are times when one can see clearly why Mom should focus on being a writer and not an artist. Last week when Mom's family was in town they went out on some photo safaris in the wilds of Las Vegas. Here is Mom's picture of this ultra-cool rhinestone lion...

Yeah that big line and those mannequin legs aren't distracting.
And Aunt Jenny's...

Guess who took this one?

and guess who took this one?

I love Mom, but there are times when I think to myself...
Thank Cod I'm stunning, as is. I make her look good.

Aunt Jenny has a lovely Etsy Store called Gilding Lilies you might want to check out for holiday gifts.

Aunt Jenny's cat, Mr Dutch, is improving greatly with the antibiotics and is getting his naughty back on. He is back to ordering everyone around. I'm sure it's all the healing thoughts my friends have been sending to him. You are all the best!

  1. Well, at least your mom takes good pictures of you, Fin!! But then again, how could any picture of you be bad??

We're happy to hear Mr. Dutch is doing better!

  2. Mom says everyone must find their own "thing"...that which comes easily and makes us purrr. For me it's singing...to boot socks mostly, but I'll sing to small fruits and vegetables too. I'm happy your mom writes beautifully Finny, looks like you already had a photographer in the family!

  3. Hi Fin, your mom sounds a bit like our mom - she wanted to draw, paint, whatever, but can't - but her lazy, good for nothing cousin draws like a pro. Mom is pretty good at pictures, but she totally understands that feeling of what is in your head not making it out the way she wants. We think you were nice to try to help her out - floof in things usually is helpful. And we have to say, we think that the photos were a 1 -1 tie because we like the wide shot of the bulbs with the backgrounds stuff - the closeup is cool and artsy but the wide angle tells more of a story to us.

  4. The sign boneyard! Mommy loves that place.
Fin you are the purrfect Muse for your Mom's Art. Because writing well is an art...not many people can. It's harder creating an image with words than any other medium.

  12. Your Aunt Jenny is good! :-)

But writing is NOT easy, either, and that takes incredible talent and skill too, so don't discount it.

  13. Fin, and your mom,

Your photos of things in different perspectives from the shots Jenny took are a nice touch, and have their own merit.

And you know, what a loss to us if you had pursued a photo career (other than taking awesome shots of Fin, that is), because we would have missed out on so much that you share with your writing.

And thanks for stopping by to see "The Boys" this morning.

  22. Fin, your mom has a great model with you there!! Your Aunt Jenny is very good!! My mom is lousy at art, writing, and taking good pictures. When she takes pictures of me, she usually cuts my head off the first hundred times before she gets a decent picture. I think she needs help! Love your picture..you are so beautiful!! Lots of love, Holly

  24. Aunt Jenny here. Thanks for the kind words. To me, art is easy, writing as well as you do, now that's hard to do! I am such a fan Baby Sister. And, I would like to mention that Housecat Confidential would make a lovey present for all the animal lovers out there. I'm just sayin'.
Thanks to all of you, it really helped Mr Dutch feel better!

  25. Yes, your Mom's medium is writing, and photography of a CERTAIN cat! Aunt Jenny has quite some photography talent.

  26. Everyone has their gifts, that's for sure. The hard part is standing back and looking at what you really are good at and not what you really want to be good at. Your Mom is a wrangler of words, has a passion for the pen.

The PM went through a similar stage. Her sister is very creative/artistic and the PM would help her out at craft sales. One year the PM tried so hard to be creative and make things to sell one Christmas. They had a booth up for three days and the PM sister sold many pieces. The PM sold *zip* of what she had made for the show. The theme was a rustic Christmas and the PM had decorated the booth with twig stars and other woodsy items and it looked really nice. She actually had people wanting to buy the stuff she threw together to decorate. That was a turning point in her thinking and she now just does creative things she likes to do, has fun doing and tries to find creativity in everything she does.

    Purrs, Goldie
